While the “Jedermann” is currently performed at Salzburg's city centre, the Porsche Sprint Challenge Central Europe (PSCCE) offered just as much entertainment not far from the festival city.
- Austrian flair at the PSCCE home event
- Sprint race wins for Eddy Waldhier and Herbert Jerich
- Surprise by Dziwok/Micko in the Endurance race
PSCCE’s Summer Festival 2020 at the Salzburgring offered Clubsport at its best. Charming Grid Girls in Dirndl costumes, delicious Kaiserschmarrn, typical folk music and a lot of track activities. This also impressed TV star Richy Müller (“Tatort”), Dakar Rally winner Matthias Walkner and ski racer Nici Schmidhofer, who accepted the invitation of series organiser Lechner Racing and enthusiastically watched the action at trackside.
Already during the practice days, the drivers and their instructors worked hard to get closer to the treacherous tyre bundles at the Salzburgring, centimetre by centimetre, to take as much momentum as possible on the long straights. Initially, championship leader Sascha Halek (AUT, PZWN Racing), who seemed to pull away in the first sprint race, did best. But Eddy Waldhier (GER, Junior Team GER), who had fallen back a few places at the start, caught up with Halek towards the middle of the race. In phases they drove around the circuit side by side and without respecting any minimum distance. In the end, rookie Waldhier succeeded with a courageous manoeuvre in the paddock curve and achieved his first sprint race victory. Halek, on the other hand, was also overtaken by guest starter Herbert Jerich (AUT, Jerich International) on the final lap. After a break of more than 25 years, Jerich crowned his motorsport comeback in the second race with the winner's trophy, ahead of S. Halek and Jonas Greif (GER, Junior Team GER). The victories in the AM category were taken by Heinz Halek (AUT, PZWNRacing), who made up seven places in the first race from his last grid position, and Klaus Boenighausen (GER, Deltabloc GT Racing).
100 Miles of Austria
The roaring of the boxer engines in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 could not be stopped even by the heavy rainfall that started in the Nesselgraben shortly before the start of the race. In the challenging conditions, LAMA Racing's Franz Dziwok (POL) and Branislav Micko (SVK) were the two drivers who came through the distance carefully, flawlessly and with consistent lap times. Behind Dziwok/Micko came the pairs H. Jerich/Antonszewski (Jerich Intl.) and Llibre/Morosan (Storage24 MOMO-Megatron).
For the first time, the complete PSCCE race day was also streamed live. The event was expertly commentated by Marc Wurzinger and the experts Jakob Schober and Robert Lechner. The races can be watched re-live on www.porschesprintchallenge.com
Herbert Jerich (Race winner at his motor sport comeback):
“We managed to set-up the car in a way that I could drive every lap like in qualifying. The victory is great, especially after the long break. At the beginning of the 1990s I learned to race at the Lechner Racing School. With the PSCCE, Lechner Racing has established an absolutely recommendable series.”
Branislav Micko (Endurance winner together with F. Dziwok):
“The conditions were extreme. I hardly saw anything because of the rain spray, only the brake lights of the car in front of me. I did everything I could to keep the car on the road. I just realized that we won, after crossing the finish line and went back to the pits were my team told me.”
Robert Lechner (Sporting Director PSCCE):
“It makes me proud to see so many happy faces in the paddock even in such a difficult year as this one. A praise also to all the drivers who, in difficult conditions in the rain, were able to judge exactly where their limit and that of the car is. Now we are looking forward to a great finale of the championship in Most.”
